10 Items You Should Never Wash in a Washing Machine: Protect Your Clothes and Appliance

Washing machines are a modern convenience that many of us can’t imagine living without. They save us time and effort by automating the arduous task of cleaning clothes. However, not everything in your wardrobe or home is washing machine friendly. Knowing what items to keep away from the washing machine can prolong the life of your apparel and preserve the performance of your appliance.

1.  Delicate Fabrics

Delicate fabrics such as lace, embroidered cloth, and silk should generally avoid the vortex of the washing machine drum. Even on a gentle cycle, these materials might snag, stretch, or suffer abrasion from rougher items. Instead, opt for hand washing with mild detergent to maintain their intricate beauty and structural integrity.

2.  Woolen Garments

Wool is a natural fiber that can be easily damaged by the heat and agitation of a washing machine. If you’ve ever accidentally shrunk a sweater, you understand the risks involved. To keep your woolen garments in shape and size, hand wash them in cool water or make use of the special wool or hand wash cycle on your machine.

3.  Items with Heavy Embellishments

Items adorned with beads, sequins, or heavy embroidery require careful attention. The washing machine can cause these embellishments to come loose, creating a messy cleanup and potentially damaging the machinery. Spot clean these articles or gently rinse them by hand to maintain their tailored charm.

4.  Bras and Underwire Lingerie

Bras and underwire lingerie need special care. The structure that supports them can break or bend when subjected to the forceful agitation of a washing machine. Use a lingerie wash bag if you must use the machine, or better yet, hand wash them to extend their life and preserve their fit.

5.  Shoes

While some canvas shoes can endure occasional machine washes, most footwear should be cleaned by alternate means. The tumbling can lead to deformity, and the soles might separate from the fabric. Consider using a soft brush and mild soap for scrubbing, and avoid water-logged shoes rolling around in your washer.

6.  Leather and Suede Items

Leather and suede have no place in a washing machine due to their specific cleaning needs. Water can alter their texture, leading to spots and stiffening. For these materials, spot treat and use specialized cleaning products to maintain their quality and appeal.

7.  Pet Items with Hair

Though tempting to toss pet bedding or toys into the washer, accumulated pet hair can clog the drain and present other maintenance issues. Regular vacuuming and using a lint roller before a gentle hand wash is ideal for keeping such items clean and machine-friendly.

8.  Heavily Soiled Items

Very dirty or stained items can present a problem for your washing machine’s balance and cleanliness. Pre-treat heavy stains and pre-soak badly soiled items before even considering a washing machine cycle, as the dirt may not come out effectively otherwise and could soil other items in the load.

9.  Swimsuits

The elastic nature of swimsuits can quickly break down when subjected to the washing machine’s agitation and temperature. Instead, rinse your swimsuits in cold water after every use to remove chlorine or salt, then lay them flat to dry to keep their shape and elasticity intact.

10.  Memory Foam Items

Whether it’s a pillow or mattress topper, memory foam should never be washed in a machine. The agitation can tear the foam and water damage can lead to mold. Instead, spot clean with a damp cloth and allow them to air out regularly to maintain their premium feel and performance.

Avoiding these items in the washing machine is a simple way to protect both your wardrobe and your appliance. By taking the extra time to hand wash or use the appropriate care methods, you can greatly extend the life and quality of your belongings.
