Why Cleaning Your Laundry Machine is Essential

It might seem ironic to clean a machine that cleans, but maintaining your laundry machine is essential for a variety of reasons. Regular cleaning not only extends the lifespan of your machine, but it also ensures that your clothes come out as clean and fresh as possible. A dirty washing machine can harbor mold, mildew, and bacteria, all of which can transfer to your clothing and cause unpleasant odors or even skin irritations.

How Often Should You Clean Your Laundry Machine?

The frequency of deep-cleaning your washing machine depends on how often you use it. As a general rule of thumb, if you use your washing machine several times a week, it’s a good idea to perform a thorough cleaning once a month. If you use it less frequently, cleaning it every few months may suffice. It’s also helpful to perform a quick clean of the drum and gaskets once a week.

Tools and Materials You’ll Need

  • White vinegar
  • Baking soda
  • Microfiber cloths
  • Old toothbrush
  • Soft scrub brush
  • Dish soap (mild and dye-free)
  • Gloves

Step-by-Step Guide to Cleaning

1. Empty the Machine

Before you begin cleaning, make sure that your washing machine is completely empty. Remove any stray clothing items, coins, or items left in the detergent drawer.

2. Clean the Detergent Drawer

Most washing machines have a detergent drawer that can be removed completely. Take it out and soak it in a sink filled with hot, soapy water. Use a soft brush or an old toothbrush to remove any residue and buildup. Rinse it thoroughly and leave it to dry while you clean the rest of the machine.

3. Wipe Down the Drum

Mix a solution of equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Spray the interior drum and use a microfiber cloth to wipe down. Pay close attention to any built-up grime or soap deposits.

4. Scrub the Gaskets

The rubber gaskets around the door of your washing machine can collect a lot of grime. Dip an old toothbrush in a mixture of hot water and dish soap, and scrub around and inside the rubber gasket. Be sure to reach underneath the fold as dirt and mold tend to build up there.

5. Run a Cleaning Cycle

After manually cleaning the drum and seals, you’ll want to ensure a comprehensive clean with a washing machine cleaning cycle. Pour two cups of white vinegar directly into the drum and run a cycle on the hottest setting. The vinegar helps break down detergent and mineral build-up and acts as a natural deodorizer.

6. Baking Soda Boost

Once the vinegar cycle completes, sprinkle half a cup of baking soda into the drum and run another hot cycle. Baking soda is excellent for tackling any remaining odors and residue.

7. Clean the Exterior

Don’t forget about the outside of your washing machine! Use a lightly dampened microfiber cloth to wipe down the exterior surfaces. For more stubborn stains or grime, a cloth dipped in a soapy solution can work wonders.

8. Final Rinse Cycle

Finally, run one more hot water rinse cycle to clear out any remaining cleaning agents, ensuring nothing transfers to your next load of laundry.

Regular Maintenance Tips

  • Leave the Door Open: After each wash load, leave the washing machine door slightly ajar. This allows air to circulate inside the drum, preventing the buildup of moisture and mildew.
  • Check the Filters: Regularly inspect and clean out the lint filter and pump as they can accumulate debris.
  • Use the Right Detergent: Make sure you are using the right type and amount of detergent to avoid excess suds, which can lead to buildup.

Maintaining a clean washing machine is not just about hygiene—it’s about improving efficiency and ensuring the longevity of your appliance. By incorporating these cleaning practices into your routine, you’ll safeguard your investment and always have fresh, clean clothes.
